Kalymnos, 1934. It is the Italian Occupation. Themelina and Christina, two classmates and best friends, share everything: their thoughts, their dreams, Themelina’s affectionate mother, a pair of yellow patent leather shoes which they take turns to wear, and a terrible secret that haunts them.
When they become witnesses to a rape that ends up in murder, their lives are turned upside down since the perpetrator is none other than the Italian commander of the island. As short time later, Christina disappears, leaving behind her one of the beloved yellow patent leather shoes, the right one. Soon after, Themelina and her mother abandon their beloved island and, like so many other compatriots, choose the path of immigration.
Their second home becomes Salin de Giraud in southern France, where the working conditions in the salt marshes are excruciating while the foreigners are daily brought up against racism, cruel employers and absolute poverty.
New friendships, romances and tiny moments of happiness help the time pass quickly until the Second World War breaks out and Themelina’s life takes a turn for the worse. Crimes, traitors, concentration camps, crematoria, resistance and a love that is born in the flames of war harden her will to live, yet, she never stops feeling as if she is missing a part. That is until a yellow patent leather show is left outside of her door.
A story about true friendship, racism, xenophobia, the insanity of violence and war, death and love. The only point of reference for lighthearted youth and hope being a pair of patent leather shoes
