THE LONELINESS OF BORDERS
An elderly Greek woman lives alone in the urban centre of Athens. She feels like a foreigner in her own city, the place where she was born and has lived her entire life. She is afraid to leave her house, afraid to live a normal life due to the foreign immigrants who have “taken over” her neighbourhood. Across the road lives a young refugee girl from Afghanistan. She too lives in fear and experiences the loneliness felt by every person who has been forced to flee their country. When this loneliness finally becomes unbearable, the elderly woman decides that live is no longer worth living if you don’t share your everyday with other people. She schemes and machinates until she finds a way to meet the young girl. A relationship between them is forged… This is a story that could easily be based on fact. A stunning reflection of contemporary Greek society.
