Two women are hiking in the mountains of Jämtland in the North of Sweden. It’s autumn and it’s raining hard, and when one of them gets too close to the edge above a raging torrent, the ground gives way and the woman falls. She manages to save herself, but she and her friend make a macabre discovery: the hand of a skeleton is protruding from the river bank. The local police arrive at the scene and start digging and find that there is more than one body buried in the ground. When the area is fully excavated six bodies have been found; four adults and two children. The Crime Investigation Department (CID) is called in, and Sebastian Bergman travels to Jämtland along with the rest of the team.
