A noble family from Smyrna, of Cretan descent, bears witness to the 1922 destruction of one of the most beautiful and cosmopolitan cities of Asia Minor. Through the chaos and disaster, the family finds itself decimated and many of its members are lost, yet those who survive find themselves in safety in Crete and Piraeus. Together with their expatriates, they fight adversities and stone by stone begin to build a new life for themselves. In his new novel, Dinos Koubatis recreates the tragic moments of a devastating war that marked entire families and remains a dark period in the story of today’s global culture.
