A life strewn with roses soaked in blood was that which Destiny had in store for Katerina.
It was spring, 1893, when she fell in love with Anestis. His parents were adamant however - there was no way they would agree to take an orphan into their home. The words they said were cruel, they were curses. And so she remained alone, with the perfume of her wedding dress still fresh on her skin, and her cheeks stained with the tears of rejection and abandonment.
And then came the Great War. April, 1917. The Turks had tightened their hold around the Greeks and History showed its harshest face. Katerina’s family abandoned Neochori and, along with thousands of other Greeks from Asia Minor, they were exiled in the deepest heart of Turkey. The losses were incomprehensible, the tears were endless.
Following the truce, Katerina returned home. When the news of the Greek Army’s arrival in Smyrna reached them, everyone shivered with hope for a better tomorrow. Once more, however, History betrayed them. Exile, death and pain would find them again.
Difficult years during which joy and pain find themselves in constant tumult. The dreams of people are like flower buds waiting to bloom, yet open as blood-soaked roses filling the air with the sweet perfume of blood that can be smelled by generations to come…
