BITTER SWEET LEMON

I thought I’d left all of that behind: the people who brought me up, the country where I was born, the garland I wore on my wedding day… They say that man’s memory is selective… That is until the moment that a bitter sweet lemon comes to wake every memory carefully hidden away…
In 1913, in the Greek village of Lidoriki, Asimoula and Konstantis married for love but when the draft knocked on their door, the army took Konstantis far away from his bride and the child they were expecting.
In 1914, the first world war broke out. In Greece the civil divide brought dark clouds over the country and into the lives of the young couple.
In 1916, 6,000 soldiers - Konstantis among them - were secretly transported from Greece to the Kaiser’s Germany. There, amidst the ashes of war, a new romance was born.
In 1944, Lidoriki is burned. A German soldier rescues two individuals from the oncoming flames, two people who come into his life like two pawns in a bizarre twist of fate. Two eras, two towns in two different countries, two women, a terrible discovery…
A novel based on real events brought to life by an eloquent young author who has captured the hearts of Greek women everywhere.
