Otfried Preussler was born in 1923 in Bohemia and moved to Bavaria where he worked as a teacher for many years. Since 1970 he does nothing but write. He is considered as one of the most successful German authors for children. His books have been translated into 33 languages. He has received many German and international awards-one of these has been an Honorary Mention on the Andersen Prize list. In his books he tells stories about wizards, trolls and little ghosts. When a journalist asked him if he found it right to write such stories for contemporary children he replied that for him, it is not only right but it is vital too! "Imagination", he says, "is an inseparable condition for the completion of every personality. How many achievements would we have accomplished if we lacked the ability to first imagine and dream of them?"
